What is Sport & exercise psychology?
It is the scientific study of people and their behaviors in sport and exercise contexts, and the practical application of that knowledge.
What are the 2 objectives of Sport psychology?
- to understand how psychological factors affect an individual’s physical performance.
- to understand how participation in sport and exercise affects a person’s psychological development, health, and wellbeing.
What is objective A and an example of it?:
Obj. A: understand the effects of psychological factors on physical or motor performance.
Example: Does lacking self-confidence influence a child’s ability to learn to swim?
What is Objective B and an example of it?:
Obj. B: understand the effects of physical activity participation on psychological development, health, and well-being.
Example: Does running reduce anxiety and depression?

What is an Educational sport psychology specialist and what do they do?
They are trained in sport & exercise science, physical education, and kinesiology, and they understand the psychology of human movement. “mental coaches”
What is a clinical sport psychologist and what do they do?
They are trained in psychology, and they treat people with severe emotional disorders.
What is needed to achieve AASP certification?
- have a masters / doctoral degree in sport science or psychology
- have taken course-work related to that knowledge
- have 400 hours of mentored experience
- pledge to AASP ethical standards
- achieve a passing score on a 115-question exam
