airway management
The process of ensuring that airway passages remain open and free from obstruction of any kind.
anesthesiologist
A physician who specializes in inducing maintaining, and reversing anesthesia and the care of the anesthetized patient.
anesthetist
A nurse who has received advanced specialty training in inducing, maintaining, and reversing anesthesia and in the care of the anesthetized patient.
apnea
The absence of breathing.
bradypnea
Abnormally slow breathing.
hyperpnea
Excessive breathing.
hyperventilation
A state in which too much air is moving in and out of the lungs.
hypopnea
Abnormally shallow or insufficient breathing.
hypoventilation
Breathing is too slow, shallow, or both.
oxygenation
The process of loading oxygen onto the hemoglobin and into the plasma for delivery to body cells.
patent
Open; the absence of obstruction.
respiration (external)
The exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the alveoli and the pulmonary circulatory system.
respiration (internal)
The exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the systemic circulatory system and body cells.
tachypnea
Breathing too rapidly.
ventilation
The process of moving air, or some other gas or combination of gases, in and out of the lungs.
