Ch. 1 Test Flashcards
Natural Selection
When some people are better equipped for survival than others and those less equipped would die.
Origins
Beginnings - creation & evolution
Classification
The grouping of objects or organisms based on a set of criteria.
Taxonomy
The discipline of identifying, naming, and classifying organisms.
Phylogeny
The evolutionary history of a species
Cladogram
A branching diagram that represents a proposed phylogeny of a species or group.
Ancestral characters (cladistic analyses)
are found within the entire line of descent of a group of organisms.
Derived characters (cladistic analyses)
are only found after a split from the descendent line.
Homologous structures
Similar structure and different functions (homes have similar structures but different functions inside)
What is NOT evidence of evolution?
The flood occurred
What is evidence of evolution?
- The fossil record
- Comparative anatomy & embryology
- Genetic similarities
- Vestigial structures
Analogous structures
Different structure and similar functions
Vestigial structures
A structure believed to once have use but evolved to become functionless.
3 ways to classify organisms
- Size and structure
- Red-blooded or bloodless
- Plants/animals
What does the fossil record NOT show?
The change of the size of an alligators teeth over years.
What does the Fossil Record show?
- Some species have changed very little
- Modern species resemble ancient species
- Record of the sequence in with fossils would have been buried in the flood
Embryo
An early, pre-birth stage of an organism’s development.
Young - Earth Creation theory
God created Earth
Creation Passive Gap Theory
God created materials of Earth sometime in the past
Creation active gap theory
God created life, destroyed it, and created life again.
Progressive creation
God performed serval creations at various times over long periods of Earth’s history.
Evolution (Micro & Macro)
Micro = small changes
Macro = large changes
God has nothing to do with it
Punctuated Equilibrium
Evolution occurred in short, fast bursts followed by long periods of time with hardly any change.
Exogenesis or Panspermia
Life originated somewhere else in the Universe and was carried to Earth here in debris from space.
