Ch. 1- Required Practicals Flashcards
What is the equipment needed in the experiment in osmosis?
Potato, knife, tile, borer, ruler, boiling tubes, bungs, filter paper and mass balance
What is the method for an experiment in osmosis?
- Cut five potato pieces using the knife, tile and borer.
- Even up all chips to the same length.
- Place all of the chips onto the filter paper to dry up excess water.
- Record the weight of each chip.
- Place the chips into boiling tubes of different sucrose solutions (distilled water, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1)
- Place a bung onto each of the tubes.
Why do the chips in the experiment for osmosis need to be the same length?
To give a fair test so that some dont have more surface area than others because more liquid would have access to the chip
Why do you need to dry up excess water in the experiment for osmosis?
So that the water doesn’t interfere with the precise concentration of salt in the boiling tube
What in the purpose of placing a bung on the top of each boiling tube in the osmosis experiment?
To keep the waste from diffusion inside the boiling tube
Why do we cut the chips in the osmosis experiment on a white tile?
For health and safety
Why do we use the same size cork borer in the osmosis experiment?
For the same size chips
Why do we use the same potato in the osmosis experiment?
Condition of cells is as similar as possible
How do you make a cheek cell slide?
- Get a sterile cotton bud and collect cheek cells.
- Swab it on the slide some methylene blue dye on it.
- Take a pipette and put a drop of water on the slide and carefully place the cover slip on top using a mounted needle
- Dry out any excess liquid causing the cover slip to move using a small piece of paper towel.
