Ch 1 Introduction Flashcards
Define Plane Survey
Assume flat surface of the earth.
Assume NS lines a parallel.
Assumes EW lines are straight.
Limited to areas of a few square miles.
Define Geodetic Surveys
Among the higher order calculations.
The curvature of the Earth is considered.
Used for large surveys.
Now GPS based.
Survey Definition
Survey is the science, art, and technology of determining the relative positions of points above, on, or beneath the earth’s surface, or of establishing points.
Examples: mining - below, construction of building - on surface, satellites - above.
Why is surveying critically important today?
Expanding population, land values appreciate, our natural resources dwindle, and human activity continues to stress the quality of our land, water, and air.
Why is surveying referred to geomatics now?
Surveying has changed a lot. Before, surveyors used ground-based methods, but today the use of electronic instruments, satellites survey systems, aerial images and processing systems, advance computer systems, geographical information systems (GIS)
Geomatics is defined as an integrated approach to the measurement, analysis, management, storage, and presentation of the description and locations of spatial data.
