It’s both a science and a profession.
What are the two types of professions in psychology?
Psychology of the body and mind.
what is behavior?
observable response or activity by an organism.
What is Adjustment?
the psychological processes through which people manage or cope with the demands of everyday life
What are Independent and Dependent Variables?
a condition or event that an experimenter varies in order to see its impact on another variable
variable that is thought to be affected by the manipulations of the independent variable
What’s the difference between experimental and control groups?
Experimental groups consists of the subjects who receive some special treatment in regard to the independent variable.
Control groups consists of similar subjects who don’t receive the special treatment to the experimental group.
What are some of the advantages and disadvantages?
Disadvantages: ethical relations
Advantages: cause and effect
What’s Correlation?
When two variables are related to each other.
What’s a correlation coefficient?
a numerical index of the degree of a relationship that exists between two variables.
What does it indicate?
- how strongly related two variables are and
- the direction of the relationship.
What’s a case study?
an in-depth investigation of an individual subject.
What are surveys?
structured questionnaires or interviews about behavior, attitudes, and beliefs.
What is Narcissism?
when people boast or obsess about talking about themselves and their appearance.
What is Naturalistic Observation?
Careful observation of behavior without intervening directly with the subjects.
What are some attributes of a self help book?
There’s books for specific problems.
Always look for books that have detailed, explicit directions about how to alter your behavior.
Try to select books that mention, at least briefly, the theoretical or research basis for the program they advocate.
