Acanthus
Stylized curled leaves of the acanthus plant are featured at the top of the ornate Corinthian columns. Plant found in the Mediterranean
Architrave
The bottom portion of an entablature
Entablature
In classical architecture, the horizontal elements supported by columns, consisting (in ascending sequence) of the architrave (bottom), frieze (middle), and cornice (top)
Caryatid
A pier carved in the form of a standing woman and used in place of a column.
Cella
(Naos) The sanctuary of a Greek temple/The shrine room in the center of the temple
Coffer
Ceiling recesses set in a geometric pattern
Corinthian
Cornice
The uppermost element of an entablature, which projects beyond the plane of the exterior wall; more generally, the overhanging molding atop any building
Ionic
Mastabas
A block like structure above ground containing a small room for offerings and another chamber
for the body and statue of the deceased
Metopes
An element (carving or picture) of the Doric frieze, set alternately with triglyphs (lines). Metope panels contain low-relief carvings
Naos
aka - Cella –The sanctuary of a Greek temple/The shrine room in the center of the temple
Obelisk
A stone monolith, square in plan, with sides tapering toward a pyramidal
top. 3 types of relief carving:

*Bas
*Alto
Orchestra
In Greek theater, the circular floor used for dancing
Order (of Architecture)
- Order – what classic order is the Temple at the front?
o Doric, Ionic, Corinthian - # of columns at the FRONT façade ie – 6 column = hexastyle; 8 columns = octastyle
- Column distribution – How are columns placed around the cella/naos
o Prostyle = only at front
o Peripteral = all the way around
o Amphiprostyle = front & back
