Ch. 1 Flashcards
What properties do all living things share?
Have ordered structures, uses energy, reproduces, grows/develops, responds to stimuli, evolves
Biosphere
All life on earth in all environments
Ecosystem
All living and nonliving parts in an area
Community
Populations of organisms in an ecosystem
Population
Group of species in an area
Organ system
Group of organs that do one body function
Organism
Individual living being
Organ
Made up of tissues to do a task in the body
Tissue
Group of similar cells that perform a task
Cell
Basic unit of life, has life’s properties
Organelle
Part of a cell with a specific function
Macromolecule
Large, biologically important molecules in cells
Molecule
Group of atoms
Atom
Smallest unit of matter
Autotroph
Organism that makes it’s own food
Heterotroph
Organism that obtains it’s food from other organisms
Homostasis
Maintaining a stable internal environment
Set points
Preset conditions in a system that are disrupted and reestablished
Recepters
Parts of a system that sense change
Effectors
Part of a system that creates a physical change in order to return to set point conditions
Negative feedback loop
Process where normal function is changed, an action reverses the change, so the system is returned to it’s original status
Positive feedback loop
Process where disruption in a system is from a normal change, and another traumatic event must reverse the change and return the system to it’s original status
Hypothesis
Proposed explanation of an observation
Theory
Widely accepted explanation backed up with evidence
