Apostle
Jesus’ disciples, and Paul.
Wrote most of NT. Parts not written by them were written by their close associates.
Authority was equal to the OT prophets.
Have authority to write God’s own words.
John 14:26; John 16:13-14
Apocrypha
Books that tell Jewish history but are not deemed worthy of equal credit of the OT canon.
Incl in the Catholic canon, not protestant.
“Things that are hidden”
Not scripture bc:
- they do not claim the same authority that the OT claim for themselves
- not regarded as God’s words by Jews at the time of their writing or afterward
- Jesus did not consider them scripture
- teachings are inconsistent with the rest of Bible
Canon
A list of all the books that belong in the Bible.
Canonical
Books deemed worthy to be included in the canon.
Covenant
An unchangeable, divinely imposed legal agreement b/w God and man that the creates the conditions of their relationship.
God-breathed
the words of scripture as being spoken by God.
2nd Tim 3.16-17
All scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man do God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.
History of Redemption
Historical perspective that allows us to conclude that no more words will be added by God to the canon after the apostles et al have written.
INCL Christ’s life, death and resurection as well as the canon of scripture.
Self-attesting
When words in a book bear witness to their own divine authorship as they are read. ie Hebrews.
