Historical Theology
Study of how Christians in different periods have understood various theological topics
Systematic theology.
Any study that answers the question, “What does the whole Bible teach us today?” about any given topic.
Philosophical Theology
Studying THEO topics w/o the use of the Bible, but using tools/methods of PHILO reasoning & what can be known about God from observing the universe.
Apologetics
Defending the faith for the purpose of convincing unbelievers.
Biblical Theology
Contains both NT/OT THEO.
Christian Ethics
What God wants us to do and what attitudes does he want us to have. Asks “ What does God require us to do & what attitudes does he require us to have today?” with regard to any given situation.
Contradiction
2 statements, with 1 statement denying the other statement. “God is 3 persons.” “God is not 3 persons.”
Major Doctrine
Doctrine that has a significant impact on our thinking about other doctrines, or on how we live as Christians.
Doctrine
What the whole Bible teaches us today about some particular topic.
Dogmatic theology
Another term for Systematic THEO. Dogma used mainly by Catholics and Lutherans and often refers to doctrines with an official church endorsement.
Minor Doctrine
Doctrine that has very little impact on how we think about other doctrines, and little impact on how we live as Christians.
New Testament Theology
THEO of the NT as a whole. Asking “What does the NT teach about the subject of X”?
Old Testament Theology
THEO of the OT as a whole. Asking “What does the OT teach of the subject of X as a whole”?
Paradox
A contradictory statement that may be true.
Presupposition
An assumption that forms the beginning point of any study.
Systematic Theology -
The Bible is true & is our only absolute std of truth.
The God who is spoken of in the Bible exists, and he is who the Bible says he is.
