CGP - Section 1 - The Design Process Flashcards
What is product evolution?
(Designers) constantly changing products
What is continuous improvement?
Designers improving their products so that it can be made easier, better and make more money.
What is market pull?
Design focused on consumer demand
How is a car an example of Market Pull?
Originally built for transporting from A to B, the consumers have demanded luxury extras such as stereos, seat-back TV’s and reclining chairs.
What could new technology do to an existing product?
Make it more desirable by making it cheaper, better looking, more functional and more widely available
How is a computer and example of Technology Push?
They started off as huge mechanical adding machines, now they are micro-chipped and perform fast and powerfully for many functions.
What reasons may a product evolve for? (excluding monetary gain)
Social
Cultural
Political
Environmental
What design feature is on many products to aid Blind people & Visually Impaired?
Braille
Big bright buttons on TV remotes for VI
How are some smoke alarms designed for Deaf people?
They have visual signals as well as audible
Give an example of product specific design for those with wheelchairs:
All 8000 London buses are wheelchair accessible.
Give an example of Cultural//Religious beliefs affecting dietary needs:
Muslims don’t eat pork.
Jews don’t eat non Kosher foods.
Give an example of significant colours in different cultures:
In China, brides traditionally wear red as it’s thought lucky (auspiciousness). Contrary to Western countries where the bride dresses in white
Why do designers need to think about age groups when designing?
Small children and elderly people may not be able to manipulate small parts and fastenings. As well as holding and using products.
What is ergonomic (design)?
Designing the product to fit the users dimensions, making it easy and comfortable to use.
What is anthropometrics?
Body measurement data
How is anthropometrics used by designers?
To make sure the product is the correct shape and size for the TMG’s
What risks can poorly ergonomically designed products lead to?
Eye-strain
Backaches
Headaches / Migraines
What percentage of the TMG do manufactures design for? (One size)
90%
In a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach, what are the cut off points?
5th percentile and 95th percentile
What does the design process star with?
The design brief
What should the design brief include?
- What kind of product is needed (and why)
- How the product will be used
- Who the product is for (TMG)
What is the point of research?
To check people want the product.
To find opinions on similar or existing products.
To explore material choices, pre-manufactured components and techniques suitable for the product.
What is Market Research?
Using questionnaires and interviews to find out the TMG’s views on products and features.
What is the point of Market Research?
To understand the needs and wants of the TMG.
What is product analysis?
Examining a current or existing product, usually by disassembling it.
What is typically assessed in a product analysis?
- How the product is made
- ## The positive and negative features of the product
