Failure to attend school
Truancy
A person who brings a court action against another.
Plaintiff
The fact-finding process by which the juvenile court
determines whether there is sufficient evidence to sustain the allegations in a petition.
Adjudicatory hearing
Those under the age of 17 who commit acts that would be
crimes if committed by an adult.
Delinquent juvenile
The final state in the processing of adjudicated juveniles in
which a decision is made on the form of treatment or penalty that should be imposed on
the child.
Dispositional hearing
Any court that has jurisdiction over matters involving juveniles.
Juvenile court
Children under the age of 18 who are neglected or abused by
parents or guardians or those who have no parents or legal guardians.
Deprived juveniles
A warrant authorizing law enforcement officials to apprehend an
offender and bring that person to court.
Arrest warrant
A warrant authorizing law enforcement officials to search for objects or
people involved in the commission of a crime and to produce them in court.
Search warrant
Those under the age of 17 who commit acts that would not be crimes if
committed by adults.
Unruly juveniles
an individual who is responsible for enforcing the law, maintaining the peace, and
serving as the jailer for a county government
Sheriff
an individual who is responsible for receiving tax
returns, maintaining tax records, and paying taxes for a county government.
The tax commissioner
primary record keeper for the county.
The clerk of the Superior Court
an individual who oversees property deeds,
marriage licenses, wills, and supervises elections in a county government.
Judge of the probate court
a group of individuals that have the power to adopt ordinances
and oversee the daily operations of a county’s government.
Board of commissioners
an individual hired by a city government who is responsible for running
the day to day operations for the city.
City manager
government entities created to serve a special function for
the state or community.
Special purpose districts
a form of city government where the major holds major
responsibilities and powers including acting as the city’s chief executive officer,
administering the city’s budget, and vetoing legislation passed by the city council
Strong mayor council
a form of city government where the mayor holds some
responsibilities, but the city council holds the majority of the power, duties, and
responsibilities.
