DED (Departement of economic development)
One of the largest state agencies; services include assistance
for the aging, family and children’s services and mental health
DHR (department of Human Resources)
Certifies teachers, approves textbooks/curriculum and distributes funds.
DOE
Plans, constructs, and maintains highways and bridges and
supports various forms of transportation, such as buses and bike trails.
DOT (department of transportation)
Enforces traffic laws, helps public safety agencies reduce crime, and
responds to natural and man-made disasters
DPS (Department of public safety)
Second highest office of the executive branch; presides over the Georgia senate and
takes on the role of the governor if the governor leaves the state; will take over office if the governor dies or is
impeached.
Lt. Governor
Keeps the state’s official records, publishes laws passed by the legislature, supervises
elections, appoints examining boards, grans corporate charters and regulates corporations and non-profit
organizations.
Secretary of State
Is the chief legal officer for the state and the head of the Department of Law
Attorney General
A court that can hear almost any civil or criminal case.
Superior court
The highest court in the state government; part of the Judicial Branch; final interpreter of
the Georgia Constitution.
Supreme court
Reasonable cause for issuing a search warrant or making an arrest; more than mere
suspicion.
Probable cause
U.S. Supreme Court Case that established the role of separate but equal
WAS Constitutional.
Plessy v. Ferguson
Minor offenses punishable by fine of less than $1,000 and punishment of less than one year
in prison.
Misdemeanor
Rights that need to be read before they accuse a person of committing a crime. “You have
the right to remain silent…”
Miranda rights
A body of citizens sworn to give a true verdict according to the evidence presented in a court of law.
Jury
Area of authority or control.
Jurisdiction
A major offense punishable by fine of more than $1,000 and punishment of more than one year in
prison.
Felony
An individual or group bring sued or charged with a crime.
Defendant
Laws dealing with crimes and their punishments.
Criminal law
A court with appellate jurisdiction that hears appeals from the decisions of lower courts.
Court of appeals
No jail time can be given for this type of law. Law concerned with private wrongs against individuals.
Civil law
U.S. Supreme Court case that overturned Plessy v. Ferguson and fully integrated U.S. schools
