CF effects Flashcards
how is water regulated in the mucus of people without CF
the CFTR protein regulates the mucus so its not too runny or thick
why is the mucus thick in people with CF
the CFTR protein does not work properly
mucus is thick and sticky not a lot of water in it
where are goblet cells found
trachea, bronchi and bronchioles
what duct does sticker mucus block
pancreatic
what is the effect of sticker mucus in the pancreatic duct (nutrients)
digestive enzymes cannot be released into the small intestine
lower enzyme concentration reduces the rate of digestion of food
means less nutrients is absorbed into the body
means lack of nutrients delivered to body cells for respiration
people who suffer from this will lack energy
what is the effect of stickier mucus in the pancreatic duct (cysts + diabetes)
pancreatic enzymes become trapped behind mucus
enzymes can damage pancreatic cells
cysts of hard fibrous tissue is created
enzymes can damage cells which produce insulin resulting in diabetes
what are the effect of CF on the reproductive system of females
stickier mucus forms a mucus plug which blocks the cervix
stops sperm from reaching the egg
reduces chances of pregnancy
what are the effect of CF on the reproductive system of males
males may lack vas deferens (sperm duct) on both sides
if vas deferens ae present mucus can partially block them
sperm cannot leave testes
reduces chances of pregnancy
