CEWE: Chapter 4: Essential Therapist Skills Flashcards
What is a good question for therapists to ask themselves to identify aspects of an intereact that haven’t been identified?
“How does what I feel now relate to what the client is doing with me?”
What is congruence and its two central components
Congruence is being aware of what one is feeling and disclosing it effectively
1. internal awareness
2. transparency/communication
What does comprehensiveness or “saying it all” mean within transparency/communication?
it means not only expressing your feeling, but expressing how the client might react to it, and the intention behind expressing the feeling (to improve the relationship)
Being therapeutically congruent involves which 5 fatcors?
- being aware of ones feelings
- knowing ones primary feelings
- being non judgemental
- disclosing for the good of the client
- being disciplined and comprehensive in communication
How do you disclose negative feelings in an affiliative, non dominant matter
- using I statements and taking responsibility for the feeling (not blaming)
- Communicating that you do not want to feel this way
- Communicating that they are expressing this because they want to repair distance and be more understanding of the client
