Describe the genral model of in session emotional change
A
Start with global distress
work through secondary emotions
Arrive at core maladpative emotions (shame, fear, sadness)
Move to core adaptive emotions (e.g., assertive anger, grief, compassion)
- Focus on needs can be a way to move from maladpative emotions to adaptive
e.g., maladpative emotion of feeling unloveable, to the more agentic and assertive “i deserve to have my need to feel loved met” and grieving what was lost

- Congruent (what the client says needs to match how they feel)

- Differentiated (explores and differentiates new aspects of the emotion rather than being stuck).
