Q

structure of cervix

A

mucosa = simple columnar

  • lamina propria = more fibrous than cellular –> important when talking about pregnancy
  • branched, tubular glands (mucus)

muscularis = dense collagenous CT with elastic and SmM fibers

mucosa = mixed columnar with with stratified squamous epithelium

  • continuous with uterine columnar epithelium at the top; transitions to non kerantized startified as cervix opens to vagina at bottom (transitional zone)
  • where cervical glands are located (simple columnar)

Q

hormonaly regulation of cervix

A

estradiol = stimulates formation of watery mucus (lysozyme)

progesterone = induces formation of a very viscous mucus
- stop more sperm from entering

relaxin = stimulates softening of the cervix by lysis of collagen fibers at the time of parturition, produced by coprus luteum and placenta
