cervical sympathetic trunk and ganglia Flashcards
where does the trunk lie in?
between the carotid sheath and the longus colli and capitus muscles.
are there white rami comunicans in the cervical sympathetic trunk?
no!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! <—- not enough !
what levels are the gray ramus comunicans located?
at each cervical nerve.
how many cervical ganglia are and what are they called?
3 the superior, middle, and inferior cervical ganglia
what is the stellate ganglion?
it is when the inferior cervical ganglion fuses with the first thoracic ganglia.
what is the largest cervical sympathetic ganglion?
superior cervical ganlia.
how is the superior cervical ganlion formed?
union of the upper four cervical ganglia.
where is the superior cervical ganglion located?
C2-C3 between carotid sheath and longus capitus muscle.
how many postganglionic branches are given off of the superior cervical ganglion?
3 a anterior, medial, and lateral.
what are the lateral branches and what do they communicate with?
they are the gray rami communicans and they communicate with the anterior primary rami of C4 as well as some cranial nerves.
where do the medial branches travel to and what do they carry?
they travel to the larynx, pharynx, and heart and they carry efferent info.
what is the branch from the medial branch to the heart called?
superior cardiac nerves
where do the anterior branches go and what do they supply?
they follow the common and external carotid arteries. they supply the vessels that supply blood to structures inside and outside the skull.
what is the smallest cervical sympathetic ganglia?
middle cervical ganglion.
where is the middle cervical ganglia located?
C6
what does the middle cervical ganglia communicate with via what?
communicates with the primary rami of C5-C6 via the gray rami communicans
how many branches are there from the middle cervical ganglia and what are they called?
2 the thyroid branches and the cardiac branches.
where does the thyroid branch go to and what is its primary function?
it travels to the thyroid and parathyroid glands and its primary function vasomotor.
what does the cardiac branch make?
the middle cardiac nerves.
what do the cardiac branches contribute to?
deep part of the cardiac plexus.
where does the inferior ganglion lie?
at C7s transverse process and neck of the first rib.
what does the inferior ganglion communicate with and via what?
communicates with the anterior primary rami of C7 and C8 (also T1 if fused to form stellate ganglion) via the gray rami communicans.
cardiac branches from the inferior ganglion travel to heart as?
the inferior cardiac nerves.
where are other branches from the inferior ganglion sent to?
other branches from the inferior ganglion are sent to the subclavion artery to form plexuses around it and its branches, principally the axillary and vertebral artery.
