CERVICAL SPINE STABILIZATON Flashcards
These patients generally require immobilization with a cervical collar: A
High risk injury
- high speed MVC
- axial loading injury
These patients generally require immobilization with a cervical collar: B
Focal neurological deficits such as paralysis
These patients generally require immobilization with a cervical collar: C
Intoxication or altered mental status
These patients generally require immobilization with a cervical collar: D
Age > 65
These patients generally require immobilization with a cervical collar: E
Presence of midline bony tenderness of the spine
These patients generally require immobilization with a cervical collar: F
Midline spinal pain with movement
Patient without any findings A-F…
May be transmitted without cervical collar
Extrication devices
Use only as needed to minimize movement of the patient when moving them from the injury point to the cot.
Maybe be removed prior to transport unless necessary for patient safety.
- Long spine board
- Vacuum mattress
- Short board
- KED
Altered mental status
A multi system trauma patient such as from a high velocity crash or a significant fall who is unable to follow commands due to:
- combativeness
- intoxication
- decreased mental status
Should remain immobilization device until handoff at the ER
Alert and cooperative
Patient with normal mental status can participate in their movement to the cot with specific instructions to limit neck movement and stop if any movement increases pain.
Penetrating trauma
These patients do not need cervical collars.
Airway concerns
Techniques to stabilize the spine should not supersede airway concerns particularly in the case of excessive bleeding or difficulty with visualization.
