Cervical Plexus Flashcards
C1 directly innervates which muscles?
Geniohyoid
Thyrohyoid
Ansa cervicalis
Originates from C1-C3
Inntervates sternothyroid, sternohyoid, and omohyoid (separate branches for interfior and superior belly)
On surface of carotid sheath, superior to internal jugular vein
What are the sensory branches of the cervical plexus (from superior to inferior)?
Lesser occipital
Great auricular
Transverse cervical
Supraclavicular nerves
Lesser occipital nerves
Sensory nerves from C2-C3
Branch into: auricular, mastoid, occipital terminal branches - innervates skin of these areas
Runs posterior to SCM and heads towards mastoid process
Great auricular nerves
Sensory nerves from C2-C3
Branch into: mastoid, auricular, facial terminal branches - innervates skin of these areas
Travels across SCM towards parotid gland
Transverse cervical nerves
Sensory nerves from C2-C3
Branches into: superior and inferior terminal branches
Travels across SCM
Innervates skin of anterior neck
Supraclavicular nerves
Sensory nerves from C3-C4
Branches into: medial, intermediate, and lateral terminal branches
Travels posterior to SCM and inferiorly over clavicle
Innervates skin of upper chest and shoulder
Where do the sensory branches of the cervical plexus branch from?
Erb’s point - midpoint posterior to SCM
Which muscles do the motor branches of the cervical plexus innervate?
Geniohyoid Thyrohyoid Omohyoid (superior and inferior belly) Sternothyroid Sternohyoid
