Arteries Flashcards
Vertebral artery
Courses superior to posterior arch of C1, angling from transverse foramen to foramen magnum
Vertbrobasilar insufficiency
Atheroscerosis narrows vertebral and basilar arteries
Vertebral artery subject to additional reduction in bloodflow bc of the angle
Dizziness, blurred vision, loss of balance, nausea (similar to vertigo)
Test: pt in supine, extension, sidebending, rotation
Internal carotid artery is ________ to the external carotid artery
Posterior
Carotid sinus
Dilated area at the most proximal part of the internal carotid artery
Has baroreceptors for the regulation of arterial blood pressure
Carotid body
On the deep side of the bifurcation of the common carotid artery into external/internal carotid
Chemoreceptors for regulation of blood oxygen
What nerve innervates the carotid sinus and the carotid body?
Glossopharyngeal nerve (CN IX)
Internal carotid artery
Travels up through the floor of the skull to supply blood to the brain
Collateral branches of external carotid artery
Superior thyroid Facial Lingual Ascending pharyngeal Posterior auricular Occipital
Anterior collateral branches of external carotid artery
Superior thyroid
Facial
Lingual
Posterior collateral branches of external carotid artery
Posterior auricular
Occipital
Terminal branches of external carotid artery
Maxillary
Superficial temporal
Superior thyroid artery
Collateral branch of external carotid artery
Supplies thyroid gland
Lingual artery
Collateral branch off of external carotid artery
Travels deep to floor of oral cavity
Can have a common branch with facial artery
Supplies tongue
Facial artery
Collateral branch off external carotid artery
Can have a common branch with lingual artery
Supplies submandibular gland (goes through it) then over inferior border of mandible to supply face
Ascending pharyngeal artery
Collateral branch off external carotid artery
Small
Deep to internal carotid
Supplies pharynx, pre-vertebral muscles, middle ear, meninges
Occipital artery
Posterior collateral branch off external carotid artery (near level of facial)
Along inferior border of posterior belly of digastric to posterior scalp
Palpable as it crosses superior nuchal line
Loops over hypoglossal nerve (CN XII)
