Cervical Flexor Muscles Flashcards
Name the 6 cervical flexor muscles
Sternocleidomastoid
Longus capitus
Longus colli
Ant. Scalenes
Rectus capitus anterior & lateralis
Name the proximal & distal attachments for the Sternocleidomastoid
Proximal
Sternal head = upper ant. Surface of the manubrium
Clavicular head = superior surface of the medial 1/3 clavicle
Distal
Lat. 1/2 of the superior nuchal line
Lat. surface of the mastoid process
What nerve supplies the Sternocleidomastoid
Accessory nerve (cranial nerve 6) and the ant. Rami nerve C2-C3
What actions does the Sternocleidomastoid muscle do
Bilaterally = cervical flexion
Unilaterally = ipsilateral side flexion & contralateral rotation
Accessory muscle for inspiration
Name the proximal & distal attachments for the Longus capitus muscle
Proximal
Transverse processes of C3-6
Distal
Inferior surface of occipital bone
What nerve supplies the Longus capitis
Ant rami C1-3
What actions does the Longus capitis do
Flexes the head & neck
Name the proximal & distal attachments for the Longus colli
Proximal
Ant. Tubercles of transverse processes C3-5
Ant. Surface of vertebral bodies C5-T3
Distal
Tubercles of ant. Arch of atlas
Ant. Tubercles of transverse processes C5-6
Ant. Surface vertebral bodies C2-4
What actions do the Longus colli muscle do
Cervical flexion
Slight ipsilateral side flexion
Contralateral rotation
What nerve supplies the Longus colli
Ant. Rami C1-3
Name the attachments for the ant. Scalenes
Ant. Tubercles on transverse processes of C3-6
Scalene tubercles
Upper surface of rib 1
Name the attachments of the middle scalenes
Transverse process of C2-7
Upper surface of rib 1 (posterior to the subclavian groove)
Name the attachments of the posterior scalenes
Posterior tubercles on transverse processes of C4-7
Upper surface of rib 2
Name the nerves that supply each scalenes
Posterior = ant. Rami C5-7
Middle = ant rami C3-7
Anterior = ant rami C4-7
What actions do the scalenes do
Elevation of ribs 1&2
Cervical side flexion
Cervical flexion
