Global Cerebral Ischemia

A

Caused by hypotension–> brain doesn’t get enough blood–> mild (transient confusion) or severe (persistant vegetative or brain death)

Histology

  1. Red neurons, neutrophil infiltration (day 1)
  2. Necrosis, macrophages, vascular proliferation–> laminar necrosis
  3. Loss of necrotic tissue (after 2 wks)

Watershed infarcts–areas most susceptible to hypoxia

-places where two arteries join (ACA/MCA)
