Cerebral Hemisphere Flashcards
describe the cerebral Hemisphere
- Forms the superior part of the brain and makes up 83% of its mass
- Contains ridges (gyri) and shallow grooves (sulci) [singular=gyrus & sulcus]
–folding increases survase area (common anatomical theme)
- Three basic regions: Cortex, white matter, and basal ganglia
- Contain very deep grooves called fissures
What are the three basic regions of the Cerebral Hemispheres?
Cortex, white matter, and basal ganglia
Where is the longitudinal fissure?
It separates the hemispheres of the brain
Where is the transverse fissure?
It separates the cerebellum?
What is the gyri?
Gyri is the upper ridge of folded brain matter.
What is the sulcus?
The sulcus or sulci (plural) is the lower groove of the folded brain matter.
How do the two hemisperes of the brain communicate?
Via the tracts in the corpus callosum
What are the five lobes of the Cerebral Hemispheres?
Frontal, Parietal, temporal, occipital, and insula
What separates the frontal from the parietal lobe?
The Central Sulcus
What separates the parietal and occipital lobes?
Parieto-occipital sulcus
What separates the temporal lobe from the frontal & parietal lobes?
the Lateral Sulcus (Sylvian fissure)
What borders the central sulcus?
The precentral gyrus and postcentral gyrus
