Cerebellum, Brain Stem Flashcards
What controls balance and complex muscular movements?
Cerebellum
What is located inferior to the occipital lobe of the cerebrum and posterior to the brain stem?
Cerebellum
What has two hemispheres?
Cerebellum
What is responsible for integration, coordination, and execution of multi-joint movements?
Cerebellum
What regulates the initiation, timing, sequencing, and force generation of muscle contractions?
Cerebellum
What assists with balance and posture maintenance?
Cerebellum
What compares the actual motor performance to that which was anticipated?
Cerebellum
How does the cerebellum function?
- Coordinates motor activity (spinal and cranial nerves) and gives smootheness to movements initiated voluntarily in the cerebral cortex
- Receives proprioceptive input from spinal cord, balance centers, cerebral cortex, visual cortex
- Times muscular activity so that muscles contract at the right time smoothly
What sends information from the muscles, tendons, joints of the body- information regarding the position of joints, rate of movements to the cerebellum?
Spinal cord
What sends information regarding vestibular apparatus/labyrinth in the ear-deals with equilibrium and position of the body/head in space to the cerebellum?
Balance centers
What sends the information so the cerebellum knows what messages the cortex is sending down to the motor neurons in the spinal cord- what movements are being requested?
Cerebral cortex
What is located at the base of the cerebrum and spinal cord?
Brain stem
What are the 3 sections of the brainstem?
Midbrain
Pons
Medulla
Which part of the brain stem connects the diencephalon to the pons?
Midbrain
Which part of the brain stem acts as a relay station between the cerebrum and spinal cord or cerebellum?
Midbrain
