Cerebellum Anatomy Flashcards
Describe the location of the cerebellum?
Inferior to the occipital and temporal lobes.
Lies posterior to the pons.
What separates the cerebellum from the occipital and temporal lobes?
Tentorium cerebelli.
What separates the cerebellum from the pons?
The 4th ventricle.
Describe the grey/white matter arrangement of the cerebellum.
The grey matter forms the outer cerebellar cortex, and inside lies the white matter nuclei.
Name the lobes of the cerebellum?
Anterior, Posterior and Flocculonodular.
Name the fissures of the cerebellum and what they separate?
Primary fissure between the anterior and posterior lobe.
Postero-lateral fissure between the posterior and flocculonodular lobes.
What connects the 2 cerebellar hemispheres?
the vermis.
Describe the arterial supply to the cerebellum?
3 paired arteries;
Superior Cerebellar (branch of basilar).
Anterior Inferior Cerebellar.
Posterior Inferior Cerebellar (branch of vertebral).
Describe the venous drainage of the cerebellum?
Superior and Inferior Cerebellar Veins.
These drain to the superior petrosal, transverse and straight dural sinuses.
What could occur from damage to the cerebellum?
Cerebellar ataxia.
Causing unsteady gait, slurred speech, dizziness and impaired co-ordination.
What could cause cerebellar ataxia?
Trauma, bleeding, inflammation, infection e.g. Lyme disease or measles.
