Cerebellum Flashcards

1
Q

Literal translation of Cerebellum
How many neurons does it contain?
What anchors the Cerebellum?
What is it’s trademark function?

A

“Little brain”
Contains as many neurons as the rest of the CNS.
Anchored by 3 pair bundles called Cerebellar Peduncles.
“Great coordinator of muscle action.”

Q

What are the cerebellum’s primary functions?4
How does it synchronize?
What does it smooth?
Balance?
Somatosensory inputs.
In what conscious context is all this accomplished and why is it done this way?

A

It synchronizes the contractions of synergistic muscles and all groups of muscles
It smooths out muscle actions by delicately grading and regulating muscle tension.
It serves a major role in equilibrium and muscle tone. A lot of vestibular, proprioception, and visual input.
It processes sensory inputs relating to continual motor activity and muscle tone.
All this is done on the subconscious level, freeing the cerebral cortex for conscious perceptions and intelligence

Q

How do sensory inputs enter the cerebellum?
Once sensory inputs pass through this gate, what is their destination?
When sensory inputs pass this destination, where are they then projected?
Projections then go from this point to their final destination.

A

Cerebellar peduncles
Cerebellar cortex
Deep cerebellar nuclei
The brainstem and the thalamus.

Q

Name the three major parts of the cerebellum.
What is the function of number two?
Name the four components of number three.

A
  1. cerebellar cortex (outer gray mantle)
  2. Medullary core of White matter of nerve fibers project to and from the cerebellum.
  3. the four pairs of deep cerebellar nuclei.
    Fastigial nuclei
    Globose nuclei
    Emboliform nuclei______Interposed nuclei
    Dentate nuclei

Q

What are folia?
How much of the cerebellar cortex is exposed to the surface?
How much of the cerebellar cortex is contained within the fissures which make smaller Gyri?

A

Fissures which fold in on themselves making many smaller gyri are called folia.
15%
85%

Q

How many cerebellar afferent fibers are there compared with cerebellar efferent fibers?

A

A approximately 3 times as many cerebellar Afferent fibers as there are cerebellar efferent fibers.
(A lot of processing is going on)
