Central Visual Processing Grover Flashcards
What is a general function of the lateral geniculate nucleus
It is a relay center for visual information to striate and extrastriate visual centers
What type of neurons receive input from M type RGC’s and what is their general characteristics
Magnocellular LGN neurons and they have large center receptive fields to response to stimulation with transient spiking (movement)
What type of neurons receive input from the P type RGC’s and what is the P type general characteristic
Parvocellular LGN neurons, and they have small center receptive fields and respond with sustained firing (shape)
What type of neurons receive information from non-m non p type RGC’s and their characteristics
Intralaminar LGN neurons and they are responsible for color differentiation
What is the NT used by the LGN neurons
Glutamate
What layer do M type LGN neurons project to
IVC alpha
What layer to P type LGN neurons project to
IVC beta
What layer do intralaminar LGN neurons project to
Layer III
Are Magnocellular LGN neurons monocular or binocular
Monocular
What are simple cells
Layer IVC alpha cells have oval shaped on and off zones and are orientation selective. Meaning that they respond best to a stimuli presented in a specific orientation that is aligned with their on zone
Describe layer IVB cells
Many are both orientation and direction selective. They fire in response to an object with a specific orientation moving in one direction allowing for the analysis of motion
Give the characteristics of P-IB layer III neurons
They are relatively intensive to wavelength and highly orientation selective, they respond to edges, and their receptive fields are small
What layer do P-IB III neurons receive their input from
IVC beta
Give blob channel neuron characteristics
No orientation selectivity, wavelength responsive and are responsible for detecting color
What is a hyper column
A small cube of cortex containing a complete set of orientation Colummns, input from both eyes, and all 3 information processing channels.
