Central Regulation of Food Intake Flashcards
Feeding Center
Lateral Hypothalamus
Satiety Center
Ventromedial hypothalamus
Arcuate nucleus contains 2 types of neurons
POMC/CART and NPY/AgRP
POMC/CART
anorexigenic –> decrease food intake and energy consumption TRH and CRH
NPY/AgRP (anabolic)
orexigenic –> increase food intake and decrease energy output
What factors modulate vagal afferent input to DVC
hormone concentrations, gastric distention, plasma glucose and FFA
Ghrelin activates
NPY/AgRP
Leptin, adipokines, and adiponectins activates
POMC/CART
Thyroid hormone and cortisol
activated by PMOC/CART catabolic signals to increase energy expenditure
Vagal afferents (IPAN and IFAN) get transmitted to
nucleus solitarius
Long term anorexigenic signals
leptin and insulin
Adipokines, insulin, pancreatic enzymes all contribute to
decrease in food consumption
Short term anorexigenic signals
CCK, 5-HT, PYY, GLP-1, Amylin, PP, glucose
