central place theory Flashcards
what does the central place theory explain
how the most profitable location can be identified
who proposed it
walter christaller
1930
german geographer
what is the central place
the market center for the exchange of goods and services by people attracted from the surrounding area
whats the market area
the area surrounding a service from which customers are attracted
whats the hinterland
the area surrounding a service from which customers are attracted
whAT TYPE of region are market areas
nodal
where is the market area
a circle around the node of service
the closer to the periphery, the —–people will get services from other nodes
more
what do geographers use to represent market areas
hexagons
why are hexagons used
compromise between squares and circles
why are circles not used to represent market areas
they overlap and leave gaps
1-overlapping is wrong cuz 1 service will always be closer than another
2-gaps mean those people are outside of a market area which is wrong
why are squares not used to represent market areas?
sides are not equidistant from the center
how do geographers determine the extent of a market area 2
1-range
2-threshold
whats the range of a service
the max distance people are willing to travel for a service
why are ranges irregular shaped
it only takes in where the place is closer than competitors.
like someone going to mcdonalds wants to go to the closest one.
retailers define range as
max distance 3/4 of customers are willing to travel
why is range hard to compute (time vs distance)
people describe how far they are going to travel in time rather than in distance so a circle will have to be drawn to express time and take into account travel time varies
what is the threshold
min # of people customers needed to support the service
how do you market area of a service
range and threshold
if a good or service only appeals to certain customers, then —————should be counted in the range
only the good or service that appeals to them
who does the threshold count for in the range
potential customers who the service appeal to
