Central Nervous System Overview Flashcards
Function
Processing Center
Interpret and respond to sensory messages
Structures
Brain, Spinal Cord
Spinal Cord
Passes down the vertebral canal, has 31 segments (each with a pair of spinal nerves)
Nerves are numbered based on their location
Cervical Enlargement
supplies nerves to upper limbs
Lumbar Enlargement
supplies nerves to the lower limbs
Ascending
Impulses travel to the brain
Descending
impulses travel to the muscles
Meninges
membranes located between bone and soft tissues of the nervous system
Dura Mater
outermost layer, blood vessels
Arachnoid mater
no blood vessels, in between layer (resembles a spiderweb)
Pia Mater
Inner membrane, contains nerves and blood vessels to nourish cells
Cerebrospinal fluid
liquid that bathes the brain and spinal cord, cushions the brain and serves as a shock absorber
