- Arachnoid Mater
Where is the cerebrospinal fluid?
- Inbetween the Arachnoid mater and pia mater
- Space called the subarachnoid spaces
What can damage to the brain and spinal cord cause?

What does the blood-brain barrier do?
-Protects the nervous system from infection/ pathogens.
What is meningitis?
-Inflammation of the meninges
What is encephalitis?
-Inflammation of the brain

-Neisseria meningitidis

A,B,C,X,Y,W
B= Most common in NZ
Where is the meningococcal bacteria carried?
- Nose
- Throat
What age are the meningococcal carrier rates higher?
-Teens/ young adults
How is the meningococcal disease transferred?
-Saliva
What increases the risk of getting meningococcal?
- Overcrowded enviroments
- Age
- Ethnicity
Symptoms of meningococcal in infants?
- Gradual onset
- Fever
- sleepy or hard to wake
- Rash
Symptoms in adults?
- Fever
- Vomiting
- Neck stiffness
- Rash
