Central Nervous System drugs Flashcards
A way of neuron to regulate other cells by conducting an action potential down the axon of the neuron
Axonal Conduction
This impedes the entry of drugs into the brain, due to passage being limited to lipid-soluble agents or via specific transport system. It prevents sudden outburst of brain cells, thus preventing injury
Blood Brain Barrier
This is a slow progressive neurodegenerative characterized by tremor, rigidity, postural instability, and slowed movement
Parkinson’s disease
Differentiate Potential seizure and Generalized seizure
Both are excitations in which potential seizures undergoes limited spread from the focus to adjacent cortical areas of brain, while Generalized seizure spreads widely throughout both hemispheres of the brain
Group of disorders characterized by excessive excitability of neurons in the Central Nervous System
Epilepsy
Under CNS Stimulants, this type of drug stimulates the release of norepinephrine and dopamine from the brain and SNS
Amphetamines
Study of drugs that alter processes controlled by the nervous system
Neuropharmacology
What is Synaptic Transmission?
Process by which information is carried across the gap between neuron and postsynaptic cell
Give 4 Mechanisms of Action of Antiepileptic drugs
- Suppression of Sodium
- Suppression of Calcium Influx
- Antagonism of Glutamate
- Potentiation of GABA
This is the most commonly prescribed anticonvulsant drugs. It stabilize nerve cells to keep them from getting overexcited by increasing efflux or decreasing influx of sodium ions
Phenytoin
Give the therapeutic level of dosage of Phenytoin, Carbamazepine, and Carboxylic Acid, respectively
- Phenytoin- 10-20 mcg/ml
- Carbamazepine- 4-12 mcg/ml
- Carboxylic Acid- 50-100 mcg/ml
An anticonvulsant drug that increases the effects of GABA by binding to a carrier protein and acts as a receptor
Gabapentin
An abstinence maintenance drug used as an aversion therapy, in which it helps a person give up a behavior or habit by having them associate it with something unpleasant. This also should not be used concurrently with alcohol
Disulfiram
What does GABA stand for?
Gamma-aminobutyric acid
Two types of Neuromuscular Blocking drugs
Depolarizing blocking agents and Non-depolarizing blocking drugs
