Central Nervous System Drugs Flashcards
What is Methylphenidate
It increases the child’s attention span and cognitive performance. It happens because of norepinephrine and dopamine will regulate the neurotransmitters and will regulate the process inside the child’s brain giving them a longer attention span.
What is Narcolepsy
It is a disorder where a person is falling asleep during activities such as walking, running etc. The Narcolepsy is also caused by dysregulation and your monoamines
How does the neurons regulate other cells
- Axonal Conduction - actual electricity conducted down to the body of your neuron
- Synaptic transmission -information is carried across the gap between neuron and postsynaptic cell.
It is Used for treatment of malignant hyperthermia
DANTROLENE SODIUM
What is Diazepam
It is an acute treatment of status epilepticus and a drug that is not recommended for long-term use due to high potential for addiction
What is Phenytoin
It Stabilize the nerve cells to keep them from getting overexcited by increasing efflux or decreasing influx of sodium ions and commomly prescribed as anticonvulsant drug
What would be the nursing considerations for dopaminergic drugs?
1.Monitor for adverse reactions and be alert for drug interactions
2.Report muscle twitching and blepharospasm [early sign of drug overdose] – if the patient is reported to have blepharospasm, it is high time to refer them to the physician
3.Monitor vitals especially during dosage adjustments
4.Evaluate understanding of drugs – some patient is way older, evaluate if they understand
5.Administer with food to prevent GI irritation [except levodopa]
6.Withhold dose, notify the physician if V/S or mental status changes significantly
7.Safety precautions
8.If the patient receives a single dose, the drug is better given at bedtime
What is the difference between the Physical dependence and tolerance
The Tolerance is a decrease of response occurring in the course of prolonged drug use. Meanwhile, the Physical dependence is a state in which abrupt discontinuation of drug use will precipitate a withdrawal syndrome.
What are the indicators for neuromascular blocking drugs
- Relax skeletal muscle during surgery
- Reduce the intensity of muscle spasms in drug-induced seizures
- Manage patients who are fighting the use of a ventilator to help to breathe
What is the step 2 in Synaptic Transmission
“The storage of neurotransmitter” it stores the neurotransmitter inside the vesicles. If there is a response to the actual potential the vesicles will infuse.
Anti-epileptic medication can cause..
Physical dependance because it can cause rebound seizures
Manifestions in Abstinence syndrome
- Nausea or vomiting
- Tremors; restlessness and inability to sleep;
- Depressed mood or irritability;
- Increase heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, and temperature;
- Tonic-clonic seizures. Illusions are common
what will happens when you use CNS drugs for a long period of time?
- It will increase the therapeutic effects
- Decrease the side effects
What is Central Nervous System
It has nerve tissues that controls the activities of the body. It is also reponsible in a suppression of seizures, relief of pain and production of anesthesia.
What is Central acting agents
It is a treatments for acute muscle spasms might be caused by anxiety, pain, and trauma. Also, it treat spasticity from conditions such as MS and cerebral palsy
It Produces less sedation and less peripheral muscle weakness than dantrolene
BACLOFEN
What is Succinylcholine
It acts like acetylcholine but is not inactivated by ACHe or Acetylcholinesterase.
What are the sedative-hypotic drugs that can also used as a anti-anxiety medication
DIAZEPAM
CLONAZEPAM
CLORAZEPATE
LORAZEPAM
What is the mechanic action and therapeutic roles of Levodopa/Carbidop
The mechanism action of
Levodopa or Carbidop is that Converted to Dopamine and activates dopamine receptors. The role is go help the dopamine agonists
What are the Seizure epileptic precaution
Remove all the objects that might be dangerous
Loosen the clothing
You turn the patient side-lying so secretion will flow at the side.
Never put anything on the patient’s mouth.
Time the seizure. – 1-2 minutes is the usual duration
