Central Nervous System Drugs Flashcards

1
Q

What is Methylphenidate

A

It increases the child’s attention span and cognitive performance. It happens because of norepinephrine and dopamine will regulate the neurotransmitters and will regulate the process inside the child’s brain giving them a longer attention span.

Q

How does the neurons regulate other cells

A
  • Axonal Conduction - actual electricity conducted down to the body of your neuron
  • Synaptic transmission -information is carried across the gap between neuron and postsynaptic cell.

Q

What is Phenytoin

A

It Stabilize the nerve cells to keep them from getting overexcited by increasing efflux or decreasing influx of sodium ions and commomly prescribed as anticonvulsant drug

Q

What would be the nursing considerations for dopaminergic drugs?

A

1.Monitor for adverse reactions and be alert for drug interactions
2.Report muscle twitching and blepharospasm [early sign of drug overdose] – if the patient is reported to have blepharospasm, it is high time to refer them to the physician
3.Monitor vitals especially during dosage adjustments
4.Evaluate understanding of drugs – some patient is way older, evaluate if they understand
5.Administer with food to prevent GI irritation [except levodopa]
6.Withhold dose, notify the physician if V/S or mental status changes significantly
7.Safety precautions
8.If the patient receives a single dose, the drug is better given at bedtime

Q

What is the difference between the Physical dependence and tolerance

A

The Tolerance is a decrease of response occurring in the course of prolonged drug use. Meanwhile, the Physical dependence is a state in which abrupt discontinuation of drug use will precipitate a withdrawal syndrome.

Q

What are the indicators for neuromascular blocking drugs

A
  • Relax skeletal muscle during surgery
  • Reduce the intensity of muscle spasms in drug-induced seizures

Q

What is the step 2 in Synaptic Transmission

A

“The storage of neurotransmitter” it stores the neurotransmitter inside the vesicles. If there is a response to the actual potential the vesicles will infuse.

A

BACLOFEN

17
Q

What is Succinylcholine

A

It acts like acetylcholine but is not inactivated by ACHe or Acetylcholinesterase.

18
Q

What are the sedative-hypotic drugs that can also used as a anti-anxiety medication

A

DIAZEPAM
CLONAZEPAM
CLORAZEPATE
LORAZEPAM

19
Q

What is the mechanic action and therapeutic roles of Levodopa/Carbidop

A

The mechanism action of
Levodopa or Carbidop is that Converted to Dopamine and activates dopamine receptors. The role is go help the dopamine agonists

20
Q

What are the Seizure epileptic precaution

A

Remove all the objects that might be dangerous
Loosen the clothing
You turn the patient side-lying so secretion will flow at the side.
Never put anything on the patient’s mouth.
Time the seizure. – 1-2 minutes is the usual duration
