Central Nervous System Drugs Flashcards
CNS (Central Nervous System)
The CNS takes in sensory information, process information, and send out motor signals.
CNS Drugs
These drugs can slow brain activity, making them useful for treating anxiety, panic, acute stress reactions, and sleep disorders.
Monoamine
These are neurotransmitters include serotonin and the catecholamines dopamine, adrenaline, and noradrenaline.
Dopamine
Adjunct in treatment of shock such as MI Trauma, open heart surgery and renal failure.
Epinephrine
-Treatment of allergic reaction, hypotension associated with septic shock.
-Added to local anesthetics to decrease systemic absorption and increase duration of activity of local anesthetic.
Pramipexole
-Treatment of Parkinson’s Disease; Moderate to severe restless leg syndrome.
Endorphins
These are chemicals produced by the body to relieve stress and pain.
Enkephalins
These are being released together with norepinephrine in order to response in a certain area of pain.
BBB (Blood Brain Barrier)
these are specialized system of brain that shields the brain from toxic substances in the blood; supplies brain tissues with nutrients, and filters harmful compounds from the brain back to the bloodstream.
ADHD (Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder)
This is a condition in which it affects people’s behavior which causes restless and trouble in concentrating since the act us due to excessive impulses.
Narcolepsy
This is a rare long-term brain condition that causes a person to suddenly fall asleep at inappropriate times.
Levadopa
This will eventually change into dopamine that helps generate impulses to the brain to control movement.
Carbidopa
This helps levadopa to last longer time in order for the levadopa to act upon.
Parkinson’s Disease
This is a type of brain disorder that causes unintended or uncontrollable movements (shaking and stiffness)
MAO-I
This helps removes the neurotransmitters norepinephrine, serotonin and dopamine from the brain.
