Central Nervous System Flashcards
Peripheral nervous system
Nerves that extend from brain and spinal cord-carry info to(afferent) carry info to the brain from senses
Motor division(efferent)
Carry info from brain to muscles, organs, glands
Somatic nervous system
Controls voluntary skeletal muscles
Autonomic nervous system
Regulates automatic, involuntary activity
Sympathetic division
Gift or flight-causes circulatory system to put digestive system as top priority
Parasympathetic division
Resting and digesting causes circulatory system to put digestive system as top priority
Neurons
Transmit nerve impulses to body parts
Dendrites
Bring nerve impulses toward cell body
Axon
Moves impulses away from cell body towards destination
Cell body
Carries out cell functions, keeps cell alive
Neuroglia
Supports, insulates, and protects neurons
Astrocytes
Type of neuroglia that protects that protects and supplies neurons with food
Myelin sheath
Insulates nerve fibers which increases transmission rates
Synaptic cleft
Separation space between neurons
Irritability
Response to stimulus and converting it to an impulse
Conductivity
Transmit impulses across the body
Action potential
Impulses caused by ion movements in and out of neurons
Resting state
K(inside axon) and Na(outside axon) ions not moving no impulse yet
Depolarization
Neuron stimulated: Na move into the axon, more positively charged inside, then k exit the axon to compensate
Repolarization
Ion pumps Na back out axon and K back until ions equalize again
Meninges
Connective tissue covering of brain and spinal cord
Nodes
Openings in myelin sheath where ion exchange takes place
Neurotransmitters
Chemical messenger that carries impulse across the synapse
Cerebrospinal fluid
Fluid that circulates around the brain and spinal cord creating s watery cushion
Cerebrum
Largest part of brain, includes frontal, parietal, occipital, temporal lobes
Frontal lobe
Short term memories, planning, voluntary skeletal muscles
Parietal lobe
Pain, pressure, touch, temperature recognition
Temporal
Hearing and smelling
Occipital lobe
Visual memory
Cerebellum
2nd largest part of brain, controls balance, equilibrium, muscle coordination
Thalamus
Receives environment information and decided if important enough to focus attention on
Hypothalamus
Controls involuntary activity like blood volume, appetite, sexual drive, metabolism
Pituitary gland
Produces growth hormone
Pons
Controls breathing, chewing, eyeball movement, facial expressions
Medulla oblongata
Controls heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, swallowing, vomiting
Pineal gland
Regulates sleep cycle
Central nervous system
Brain, spinal cord-receives incoming sensory info and issues instructions to body
