Central Nervous System Flashcards
Central Nervous System
Composed of the brain and the spinal cord
Communication and action occur in the body
Divided into two parts: CNS and PNS
Peripheal Nervous System
composed of nerves that branch- off from the spinal cord and innervate the body ‘
Sends signls by the brain to the target location
Nueron
composed of cell body, dendrites, and axon
Cell Body
contains the nucleus and organelles
Dendrite
SHORT branch-link extentions that generate eletrical impulse
Axon
LONG extention that trasnmits to other neurons
Myelin sheaths
covers the axon and helps increase speed of impulses
Synapses
Space between the terminal of the dendrite
Sensory Nueron
AFFERENT Nueron that sends a message to the central nervous system
Motor neuron
Efferent impulse to the muscle
Automatic Nervous System
INVOLUNTARY actions such as the heart rate, digestion, and respiration
Somatic Nervous System
VOLUNTARY action such as the movement of the limbs
