Censorship and Regulation Flashcards
Self regulation
-when an institution makes an active choice itself to show or
censor something. This may be because they may deem it to be too risky or
offensive for the audiences they are trying to reach.
Independent regulation
Regulators like the BBFC or OFCOM are institutions
that can impose bans or fines if the institution does not act in accordance with
laws set out. For example, in Britain, a film must be passed by the BBFC and
given a rating before it can be shown.
Why regulate?
• Media regulation seeks to protect vulnerable groups within society
who may be ‘victim” to passive consumption
• Protect children/the younger generation and the vulnerable from
viewing something that might be unsuitable for them
