Cellular Respiration Flashcards
Why is NAD+ usually associated with with dehydrogenized enzymes?
Because both are involved with each other in oxidation reactions
What is the probable origin of the mitochondria in the eukaryotic cell?
What evidence is there for this?
Endosymbiosis
Mitochondria have their own DNA, RNA and ribosomes
What’s the definition of a strict aerobe?
Its when oxygen is present in fermentation
What is the definition of a strict anaerobe?
Its when oxygen is not present in fermentation
What is the definition of a facultative anaerobe?
Oxygen can or cannot be present for fermentation to take place
Pyretic acid is the precursor for which two alternative biochemical pathways in the cell and where do they occur?
Glycolysis - Occurs in the cytoplasm
Krebs cycle - Occurs in the mitochondrial matrix
What is substrate phosphorylation?
Type of ATP synthesis - Phosphate from an organic molecule are directly transferred to ADP
What is oxidative phosphorylation?
Type of ATP synthesis - Makes 90% of ATP in the electron transport chain
Why do electron transport chains depend on being in membranes for their functioning?
Because electron transfer chains functions by storing hydrogen ions in the intermembrane space which in turn are used to produce ATP
Why does prokaryotic cells have a net yield of 38 ATP molecules/molecule glucose, while eukaryotic cells only have a net yield of 36 ATP molecules/molecule glucose?
Mainly because eukaryotic cells are larger than prokaryotic cells
