Cellular Respiration Flashcards
What chemical pathway/s does Aerobic Respiration use?
Glycolysis, Krebs cycle, and Electron Transport chain
What chemical pathway/s does Anaerobic respiration use?
Glycolysis
Where is the site of the electron transport chain?
The inner membrane of the mitochondria.
What does the electron transport chain do?
It makes the majority of ATP molecules during aerobic respiration.
Why is cristae beneficial to aerobic respiration?
Increases the surface area of the inner membrane so the electron transport chain can maximise ATP production.
Pros of Anaerobic Respiration
Less reactions involved therefore it is the fastest way to make ATP.
Cons of Anaerobic Respiration
Not many ATP produced therefore the ATP is used up quickly. Only 2ATP per 1 glucose made.
Lactic acid is produced as a byproduct and when it builds up it lowers the cells pH and is toxic to enzymes. (Can cause them to denature)
