Cellular Respiration Flashcards
Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) is made up of what molecules?
Adenosine, Ribose, Triphosphate group
What does the cell need energy for?
for mechanical work, to make new materials, for (active) transport, to maintain order
What are the two important compartments of the mitochondria for respiration
Matrix and Inner membrane
Why is the inner membrane of the mitochondria highly folded?
Folds are called christae. For larger surface area so that more electron transport chain enzymes and ATP synthase can be present (and therefore more ATP can be produced)
What are the 3 stages of cellular respiration?
Glycolisis, Pyruvate Oxidation & Citric Acid Cycle, Oxidative Phosphorylation
What are the two parts to oxidative Phosphorylation?
Electron transport chain (electrons from NADH and FADH2) and chemiosmosis (ATP production)
What does ATP enable?
The controlled release of energy. If it was not done in this controlled way, the excess heat would damage the cell.
If a cell is a high energy cell, what will it have more of??
More mitochondria in the cell in order to produce more ATP. Eg. muscle cells
