Cellular Respiration Flashcards
Explain the process of anaerobic respiration
Oxygen not required. Undergoes process of glycolysis where 4 ATP and 2 Pyruvate molecules are produced.
Explain the process of aerobic respiration
Oxygen required.
- Glycolysis- 2 ATP, 2 Pyruvate molecules
- Krebs Cycle- Acetyl-coA, 2 ATP, 4 CO2 as waste, H ions, electrons
- Electron transport chain- 32 to 34 ATP, 12 water molecules
Where does cellular respiration occur?
Mitochondria
Purpose of cellular respiration
To break down sugar in the presence of oxygen to release energy in the form of ATP
Explain respiration when energy is required quickly
Glycolysis is beneficial when there is not enough time for oxygen to be delivered to a muscle (sprinting)
The muscles undergo anaerobic respiration, producing lactate (later turned lactic acid).
Once over, oxygen is delivered and aerobic respiration recommences. An enzyme breaks down any accumulated lactic acid.
