Q

Explain the process of aerobic respiration

A

Oxygen required.

  1. Glycolysis- 2 ATP, 2 Pyruvate molecules
  2. Krebs Cycle- Acetyl-coA, 2 ATP, 4 CO2 as waste, H ions, electrons
  3. Electron transport chain- 32 to 34 ATP, 12 water molecules

Q

Explain respiration when energy is required quickly

A

Glycolysis is beneficial when there is not enough time for oxygen to be delivered to a muscle (sprinting)
The muscles undergo anaerobic respiration, producing lactate (later turned lactic acid).
Once over, oxygen is delivered and aerobic respiration recommences. An enzyme breaks down any accumulated lactic acid.
