Cellular processes Flashcards
What is a microorganism?
an organism that can only be seen with a microscope
What is a unicellular organism?
Living things made of a single cell
What are Phytoplankton?
Unicellular organisms that provide most of the oxygen on earth and are the foundation of the food chain.
3 Unicellular organisms?
Paramica, E.coli, Amoeba
Paramica?
Paramecia have cilia which are tiny hairs that act like oar and propel the organism along
E.coli?
E.coli bacteria move by rotating a flagellum which looks like a tail.
Amoeba?
Amoeba move by changing shaping and forcing its cytoplasm into extensions called pseudopods
What does ameoba mean?
The greek word for change
What does an ameoba do when food is nearby?
Its extends its pseudopods to capture it
Why is something with one cell a organisim
Because its a living thing and they reproduce, grow and perform all the basic needs to survive.
What is a multicellular organism?
An organism that rely on a variety of types of cells to perform cellular functions. They types of cells are called specialized cells.
What are specialized cells?
Specialized cells are cells that perform specific jobs and or functions such as digestion or movement. They must interact with other cells in the organism to carry out their tasks succesfully.
Why are unicellular organisms usually micro-sized?
because cellular activities like diffusion and osmosis are performed most efficiently at that size
Why do Cells die?
They have been damaged
They have received enough food or water
They reached the end of their lifespan
What is cell division?
When one cell divides into two new cells
