Cellular architecture of the body: introduction (Dr. Campbell) Flashcards
What are tissues ?
Collections of cells.
What are the 4 primary tissues ?
Connective, muscle, epithelial, nervous.
How many tissues make up an organ ?
2 or more.
What is the extracellular matrix (ECM) ?
ECM = substance found between cells
What are the 2 major components of the ECM ?
(i) fibres, visible in the microscope
(ii) a non-fibrous network of complex molecules that bind tissue fluids
What kind of tissue is the ECM considered to be ?
Connective tissue (fibrous tissue, supporting tissue).
What are the 2 major components of living organisms ?
Cells + ECM
How do different body structures differ ?
- cells properties
- quantity + composition of ECM
How are tissues arranged in blood vessels or in the gut ?
In layers.
Which tissues is systematically found underneath epithelial tissue ?
Connective tissue.
In which tissues do blood vessels and nerves travel ?
Connective tissue.
In which places is connective tissue not present ?
Central nervous tissue and epithelial sheets.
What are examples of specialized connective tissue ?
Bone, cartilage, fat, blood.
What are the different types of epithelial arrangements ?
Simple squamous, stratified, pseudo-stratified.
What different shapes can epithelial cells acquire ?
Cuboidal, columnar, squamous.
