Cells Topic 1 Flashcards
What are cells
The building blocks of life - all living things are composed of cells
What is in an animal cell
Nucleus, cell membrane, mitochondria, cytoplasm, nucleur membrane
What is the cell membranes function
Control the entry and exit of substances from the cell
What is the function of chromosomes
Thread like structures composed of DNA that carry genes
What is the function of a nucleur membrane
Encloses the genetic material inside the nucleus
What is the function of cytoplasm
Site of chemical reactions in the cell
What is the function of the nucleus
Control centre of the cell
What is the function of mitochondria
Sites of respiration in the cell
What is the function of the cellulose cell wall
Provides strength and shape to the cell
What is the function of chloroplasts
Contain the green pigment, chlorophyll to absorb light for photosynthesis
What is the function of a permanent vacuole
Stores water, salt and sugars
What is in the plant cell
Cell wall, cell membrane, vacuole, cytoplasm, mitochondria, chloroplasts, nucleus
What do bacterial cells not have, and what do they have instead?
A nucleus, instead they have 1 larhe circular chromosome and extra small rings of DNA called plasmids
Is the bacterial cell wall made of cellulose
No it is not
What is in a bacterial cell
Capsule, cell wall, plasma membrane, cytoplasm, ribosomes, plasmid, pili, bacterial flagellum nucleoid (circular DNA)
