Cells, Tissues And Organs Flashcards
In which part of the cell does protein synthesis take place?
Ribosomes
In which part of the cell does photosynthesis take place
Chloroplasts
What does a permanent vacuole contain
Sap
What is a cell wall made out of and what is it for?
Cellulose and for support
What is the function of The cell membrane
It controls the movement of materials in and out of the cell
What happens in the cytoplasm
Chemical reactions take place
What the type of cell sometimes has flagella and doesn’t have a nucleus
Bacteria cell
Why is it possible to see a bacterial colony but not a singular bacterium
A singular bacterium is too small to see
Why do muscle cells need a lot of mitochondria
Mitochondria release energy which muscles need for movement
What is a stem cell
And undifferentiated cell with the potential to form a wide variety of different cell types
What is diffusion
The movement of a substance from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration through a partially permeable membrane- down a concentration gradient.
Where does diffusion happen in plants
The movement of carbon dioxide into actively photosynthesising plant cells
Where does the difffusion happen in the body
The diffusion of oxygen into the cells of the body from the bloodstream as the cells are respiring and using up oxygen
Where else does the diffusion happen in the body?
The diffusion of simple sugars and amino acids from the got through cell membranes
What is a tissue
I tissue is a group of cells with similar structure and functions working together
What does muscle tissue do
It contracts to bring about movement
What does glandular tissue do
Produces substances such as enzymes or hormones
What does epithelial tissue do
Covers some parts of the body
What is epidermal tissue in plants
The tissue which covers the plant
What does the plant tissue mesophyll do
Photosynthesises
What is the purpose of xylem and phloem and what do they transport?
Transport substances such as water and nutrients around the plant
Where is soluble food absorbed
Small intestine
Where are digestive juices produced
In the pancreas and salivary glands
Where is Bile produced
The liver
What happens in the large intestine
Water is absorbed from the undigested food producing faeces
What is meant by the term differentiation of cells?
When cells start to divide they are very similar as the tissues develop the cells change to form particular cells with particular functions
Name three organs in the human digestive system
Liver, small intestine, stomach
How is a leaf cell adapted to carry out photosynthesis
The leaf has mesophyll tissue. The mesophyll cells contain chloroplasts which can photosynthesise
Describe in detail what happens to food as it passes through the digestive system
The insoluble food is mixed with digestive juices produced by glands it is digested in the stomach and small intestine, bile produced by the liver is added to the food to help digestion, absorption of the soluble food takes place in the small intestine, water is absorbed by the large intestine
Give two differences between a plant leaf cell and a yeast cell
Leaf cells have chloroplasts and the cellulose cell wall, yeast does not have chloroplasts and no Celulose in its wall
In which part of the cell is energy released during respiration?
Mitochondria
