Q

What is a negative feedback loop? Give an example

A

When a variable throws the body out of balance, the body counteracts in response.

Q

What’s a positive feedback loop? And give an example.

A

A positive feedback loop, is when the body supports the change that the body has made and will create more of that variable. For example when a mother breast feeds, she produces more and more milk.

Q

What kind of cells are there? Describe the difference

A

Prokaryotic cells and eukaryotic cells
1) Prokaryotic cells have no nucleus, eukaryotic cells DO.
2) prokaryotic cells are unorganised inside the cell membrane but eukaryotic cells have organelles
3) prokaryotic cells are usually bacterial so divide quickly. Euk divide by mitosis

8
Q

Describe what the membrane of the eukaryotic cell is like.

A

The cell membrane is a phospholipid bilayer where the outside is hydrophilic and the inside is hydrophobic. It contains TRANSMEMBRANE PROTEINS which help the transportation of substances into and out of the cell.

9
Q

Name 6 organelles inside the eukaryotic cell.

A
  1. NUCLEUS - brain
  2. MITOCHONDRIA- creates the ATP
    3.RIBOSOMES - creates the protein
  3. ROUGH ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM - full of ribosomes. Makes and transports protein
  4. SMOOTH ER- creates & stored fats & lipids and calcium
  5. GOLGI APPARATUS - sends the proteins out the cell.
  6. LYSOSOMES- breaks down molecules

Q

What is mitosis what is meiosis ?

A

Mitosis happens within SOMATIC cells. Creates 2 identical cells to the mother cell. Have 46 chromosomes

Meiosis happens with SEX CELLS. Have 23 chromosomes. And creates the zygote.

Q

If a particle is passing from high concentration to low concentration what kind of transport is this ?

A

This is passive transport. Think of it like a football stadium. And lots of people pushing you through the doors.

17
Q

What are membranes ?

A

Membranes contain both connective and epithelial tissues

18
Q

Give 4 examples of membranes.

A

Cutaneous membrane : skin
Serous membrane : double layered, lungs, abdominals, heart
mucous membrane: digestive, respiratory and urinary system
synovial membrane: found in joints

19

What is the serous membrane around the lungs called ?

A

Pleura

20
Q

What is the serous membrane around the heart called ?

A

Pericardium

21
Q

What is the serous membrane around the abdominal cavity called ?

A

Peritoneum
