Cells Genetics And Tissue Flashcards
What 5 variables keep your body in homeostasis?
- Acidity of the body
- Temperature
- Water content
- Electrodes
- Blood Glucose levels
What is normal body temperature
Between 36.5 and 37.5 degrees
What is normal blood glucose?
4-7 millimoles per litre
What is normal acidity of the blood?
7.35-7.45
What is a negative feedback loop? Give an example
When a variable throws the body out of balance, the body counteracts in response.
What’s a positive feedback loop? And give an example.
A positive feedback loop, is when the body supports the change that the body has made and will create more of that variable. For example when a mother breast feeds, she produces more and more milk.
What kind of cells are there? Describe the difference
Prokaryotic cells and eukaryotic cells
1) Prokaryotic cells have no nucleus, eukaryotic cells DO.
2) prokaryotic cells are unorganised inside the cell membrane but eukaryotic cells have organelles
3) prokaryotic cells are usually bacterial so divide quickly. Euk divide by mitosis
Describe what the membrane of the eukaryotic cell is like.
The cell membrane is a phospholipid bilayer where the outside is hydrophilic and the inside is hydrophobic. It contains TRANSMEMBRANE PROTEINS which help the transportation of substances into and out of the cell.
Name 6 organelles inside the eukaryotic cell.
- NUCLEUS - brain
- MITOCHONDRIA- creates the ATP
3.RIBOSOMES - creates the protein - ROUGH ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM - full of ribosomes. Makes and transports protein
- SMOOTH ER- creates & stored fats & lipids and calcium
- GOLGI APPARATUS - sends the proteins out the cell.
- LYSOSOMES- breaks down molecules
What is mitosis what is meiosis ?
Mitosis happens within SOMATIC cells. Creates 2 identical cells to the mother cell. Have 46 chromosomes
Meiosis happens with SEX CELLS. Have 23 chromosomes. And creates the zygote.
If a particle is passing from high concentration to low concentration what kind of transport is this ?
This is passive transport. Think of it like a football stadium. And lots of people pushing you through the doors.
What is epithelial tissue and where might you find it?
Epithelial tissue is tightly packed together tissue and it covers organs for example - skin, digestive system, lungs and heart and liver
What is connective tissue and where will you find it ?
Connective tissue.
spaced apart cells and can be a solid or liquid.
You can find it in bones, blood, ligaments
There are three kinds of cells within a connective tissue. What are they?
The white blood cells
Adipocytes - which are fat storage cells
Fibroblasts which make collagen
Name 2 kinds of tissue and where would you find them
Epithelial tissue - surround organs like lungs, heart, urinary tract
Connective tissue can be solid or liquid, and is found within bones, cartilage, ligaments
