Cells (General) Flashcards
What are the three points of the cell theory?
- The cell is the basic unit of life.
- All living things are made of one or more cells (unicellular, multi-cellular).
- All cells come from other cells, via the process of cell division.
Define cell.
Cells are the basic unit of life.
Name the theory stating that life can be produced by non-living matter and who disproved this theory.
The theory is spontaneous generation ad Francesco Redi disproved the theory.
What is Robert Hooke famous for?
His work led to the creation of the term “cell”.
What is Antony van Leeuwenhoek famous for?
He discovered the first successful light microscope.
Facts about Amoeba.
- Water-based environments (fresh & saltwater) or wet decaying vegetation
- Most are harmless, some cause disease
- Selectively Permeable
- Water enters via the process of osmosis
- Can be herbivores, carnivores, or omnivores, and are predators.
What is the formula for cellular respiration (Mitochondria are responsible for releasing the energy from sugar. This is the process of cellular respiration)?
Glucose + Oxygen = Energy + Water + Carbon Dioxide
C6 H12 o6 + 6o2 = Energy + 6H20 + 6CO2
Plants make their own sugar in a process called photosynthesis. In plants, photosynthesis makes the sugar, and then cellular respiration releases the energy from it.
What is the formula for photosynthesis?
Water + Carbon Dioxide + Sunlight > Glucose + Oxygen
H20 + CO2 Sunlight > C6 H12 O6 + O2
What are the three cellular processes?
3 cellular processes:
- transforming energy
- processing/transforming energy
- reproduction
