Cell Parts Flashcards
Nucleus
- Directs all the activities of the cell.
- DNA is kept, RNA is transcribed.
Nucleolus
- Makes Ribosomes
- Contains chromosomes
Endoplasmic Reticulum
- Passages that transport molecules
- 2 types: Rough (ribosomes attached) & Smooth (none)
Ribosomes
-Manufacture the proteins that are essential for cell growth/survival.
Mitochondria
-Break down food molecules (sugar & fat) in order to to release their stored energy.
Lysosomes
-Breaks down food and digests waste.
Golgi Body/Apparatus
-Combines simple proteins to make more complex molecules to be later secreted (in/out cell)
Vacuoles
- Store excess food and waste.
- Plants have one large, Animals have many small
Cytoplasm
- Gel-like fluid that holds the organelles.
- Consists of Cytosol (water, salt, and sugars)
Centriole
-Help with cell division in animal cells.
Cell Membrane
- Protects the cell, controls what enters/leaves the cell
- Selectively Permeable
Cell Wall (Plants)
-Layer of protection since plants are quite vulnerable
Chloroplast (Plants)
-Turns sunlight into energy/food (glucose)
