Cells & Control Flashcards
Mitosis
For growth and repair (to make body cells)
Meiosis
To make (sex) gametes
Number of chromosomes after mitosis
Diploid (46)
Number of chromosomes after meiosis
Haploid (23)
Product of mitosis
2 genetically identical diploid daughter cells
Interphase
DNA replicates; new organelles synthesised; chromosomes not clearly visible
Prophase
Nuclear membrane breaks down; spindle fibres form
Metaphase
Chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell and are attached to spindle fibres by their centromeres
Anaphase
Centromere splits and chromatids separate to opposite poles of the cell
Telophase
Chromosomes unravel; nuclear membrane reforms
Cytokinesis
Cytoplasm splits to form 2 daughter cells
Cancer
Uncontrollable cell division
Cell division
When cell divides to produce new cells for growth and repair (animals and plants)
Elongation
When cells become longer/ expand and so increases in size (only plants)
Cell differentiation
Stem cells change so that it becomes specialised for a particular job eg egg cells (animals and plants)
